There are journeys the feet never take, yet the heart travels miles. And then there are journeys of the eyes, silent, subtle, and often unnoticed that shape the destiny of the soul. We live in a world that celebrates sight. Everything is designed to capture attention, to pull the gaze, to invite the eyes to wander. But rarely are we taught that not every glance is harmless, not every sight is neutral and not every moment of looking leaves the heart untouched. Because the eyes do not merely see, they absorb.
At first, it begins innocently. A passing glance. A moment of curiosity. A look that lingers just a second longer than it should. The heart whispers, “It’s nothing.” But slowly, that “nothing” begins to leave traces. The purity of the heart dims, not all at once, but like a sunset… gradual, quiet until darkness settles.
Allah, in His infinite wisdom, did not command modesty of actions alone. He began with the gaze. Because He knows what we often ignore: the eyes are the doorway to the heart.
Allah says in the Qur’an: O Prophet! Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity. That is purer for them. Surely Allah is All-Aware of what they do. (24:31).
Every forbidden glance plants a seed. And seeds, even the smallest ones, do not remain buried forever. They grow into thoughts, into desires, into restlessness. The heart that once found peace in remembrance begins to feel distant. The sweetness of ibadah fades. The connection weakens.
And the person wonders…”Why does my heart feel heavy?”
But perhaps the answer lies not in what the tongue speaks, but in what the eyes have been silently consuming. Yet, amidst this struggle, there is mercy. There is a moment, a powerful, life-altering moment, when a person lowers their gaze for the sake of Allah. Not out of fear of people, not out of circumstance… but purely because He is watching. That moment is unseen by the world. No applause. No recognition. But in the Heavens, it is of high status. Because to restrain the eyes in a world full of temptation is an act of huge strength.
And Allah replaces what is left for His sake with something far greater: a clarity in the heart, a noor in the soul, a peace that cannot be explained, only felt. It is said that the one who guards their gaze is gifted with a special kind of insight: a light that helps them see truth from falsehood, right from wrong. While others wander in confusion, their hearts remain anchored. Because they chose to control what entered their hearts.
The wandering eyes, then, are not just about sight, they are about direction.
Where are your eyes leading you?
Closer to Allah or farther away?
Every glance is a choice. Every choice is a step. And every step is either towards light or away from it.
So pause. Reflect. Realign.
Train your eyes to seek what pleases Allah, the beauty of His creation, the words of His Book, the signs that remind you of Him. Let your gaze become an ibadah (act of worship), not a distraction. Because the eyes that learn to lower themselves in this world will be raised with honor in the next. And perhaps, on that Day, when eyes will be humbled in fear & hope, yours will shine with a noor that was nurtured in silence, through every glance you chose to turn away. Guard your eyes and you guard your heart.
And sometimes the lesson of the eyes is not learned through words, but through a moment that quietly breaks you & then rebuild.
There was once a young girl. Soft-hearted. Modest in appearance. Regular in her prayers. To the world, she seemed composed, someone trying to hold onto her deen in a world that constantly pulls away from it. But within her there was a silent struggle. Her eyes wandered. Not in ways anyone could easily point out. Not loudly. Not shamelessly. Just small glances, lingering moments, scrolling a little longer, looking where she knew she shouldn’t.
And every time, she told herself:
“It’s just this once…”
“It doesn’t matter…”
But it did.
Because slowly, something began to change.
Her heart, once soft at the mention of Allah began to feel distant. Her duas grew heavy, and her salah, once comforting, felt empty.
She didn’t understand it at first. Everything else in her life seemed fine. So why did her connection with Allah feel like it was slipping through her fingers?
One night, unable to ignore the restlessness in her chest, she sat alone, her phone in her hand, but her heart somewhere else.
And for the first time she paused & reflected.
Her mind traced back the small, unnoticed habits: the glances, the curiosity, the moments her eyes chose dunya over discipline. And it hit her.
Not harshly… but deeply. Maybe, it was never ‘just a glance’. Tears filled her eyes, not out of despair, but out of realization. Because she missed it. She missed the sweetness of being close to Allah. She missed the peace that once rested gently in her heart.
And in that quiet, vulnerable moment… she made a choice. Not for anyone else. Not to prove anything. But purely, sincerely for Allah. “Ya Allah, I want to come back.”
The next day, nothing around her changed.
The same world. The same distractions. The same temptations, now just a tap away. But she fought differently.
Her eyes lowered, sometimes instantly, sometimes after a struggle. She unfollowed what pulled her away. She closed what disturbed her heart. She chose to look away… even when it wasn’t easy.
Her salah felt lighter. Her heart felt calmer. Her duas, felt alive again. Not because she became perfect, but because she became sincere.
One evening, as she raised her hands in dua, a tear slipped down her cheek. But this time, it carried peace. Because she realized something powerful: The world had not changed. But her direction had. And that was enough for Allah to bring her back closer.
So, to every girl who feels that quiet distance, who struggles in silence, who is trying, failing, and trying again. Know this:
Your efforts are seen. Your struggles matter. And every time you lower your gaze for Allah, you are choosing light over darkness. You are choosing Him over everything else. And perhaps, one day, when hearts will be exposed & eyes will lower in awe, your eyes, the ones you trained to turn away in this dunya, will be among those that shine with noor. Because sometimes, the greatest strength is not in what you show the world…but in what you quietly choose to look away from, for the sake of Allah.
The qalb does not lose its light suddenly. It dims with every glance that forgets Allah. And it returns with every glance that remembers Him.
So, if your heart feels distant, if your ibadah feels heavy, if your soul feels unsettled, look not only at what you are doing, but at what your eyes have been seeing. Because sometimes, the way back to Allah begins with something as simple & as powerful as lowering your gaze.
And who knows, that one glance you choose to turn away from today, might be the very reason your heart finds its noor & your soul finds its way back home.
